Originally known as the Australian Gold Nugget, the Gold Kangaroo is struck by the Perth Mint in Western Australia, which opened in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint meant to manufacture British Sovereigns. The original reverse showcased the well-known gold nugget found in Australia in 1869. Updates to the reverse in 1989 replaced the nugget with the iconic Australian kangaroo. The obverse side has a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England. The original Australian Gold Nugget is a rarity in the gold bullion coin market, while the Gold Kangaroo design gets updated every year, making each year’s version a limited-edition collectible.
