Authorized in 1792, the first $10 gold piece (the Eagle) was released in 1795 with the rare Capped Bust to Right, Small Eagle reverse. This design was replaced in 1797 by the Heraldic Eagle reverse, which was minted until 1804. Due to the country’s limited gold supply, Eagles did not return to production until 1838, when the Liberty Head was issued.
