About 20 percent larger than the American Gold Eagle, the Mexican 50 Peso, or Centenario, gold coin, commemorates Mexico’s liberation from Spain. The obverse depicts the Angel of Independence holding a laurel wreath that signifies victory, as well as a broken chain representing freedom. First minted in 1921, the Mexican 50 Peso equals the gold purity of popular pre-1933 U.S. gold coins such as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Because of its lower premium, however, investors can purchase a magnificent piece of history for a lower price.
